Swiss cop quits job to help kids in Philippines

This is a moving story which made me think of a few things like:
1. It is embarrassing that a foreigner would have to do it for our kids?
2. Why not do it ourselves . . . not only for the sake of compassion but also for our self-respect?

I know that you cannot give something that you don't have. So this challenge of compassion and charity that I would raise is addressed to "The Have's" of Philippine society. For us Gigaquitnons in particular, this is addressed to our well-off kababayans.

By the way, I would like to cite the Gigaquitnons who have supported the Gigaquit Civic Club (GCC) projects especially our Scholarship initiative. Your help is much appreciated. This business of helping our less fortunate kababayans is the business of all Gigaquitnons . . . not just of the GCC.

We also appreciate those Gigaquitnons who are doing their share in a silent manner. Their activities may not be very visible but am aware of their efforts to help not only relatives but also others finish their education.

Lastly, I remember the adage "No man is so poor that he cannot help, and no man is so rich that he will not be in need of assistance" (I can't remember the exact words but the idea is the same). So to those who does not have the financial wherewithal, you could still help through your talents, efforts and time. For example, you can help the GCC solicit for our projects. Another is communicate our "mission"to those who have not read or heard about what we are trying to do. And several other possibilities . . .

Is Alambique, Gigaquit the place of origin of Las-ay?

The word Alambique comes from the word Alembic which means . . .
1. a vessel with a beaked cap or head, formerly used in distilling.
2. anything that transforms, purifies, or refines.
Origin: 1350–1400; ME, var. of alambic < ML alambicus < dial. Ar al the anbīq still < Gk ámbix cup

Also, please check these . . .
http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alambique
http://www.alambique.org/
http://www.alambiques.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alembic
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/alembic

From the above information, we can deduce that the word Alambique is related to wine making . . . which led to the question . . . is it in Barangay Alambique, Gigaquit where our Las-ay wine originated?

Love thy kababayan

Dear Gigaquitnons and friends around the world,

Let this message begin with the following words . . .

HELP A STUDENT, HELP A FAMILY, HELP A TOWN, HELP A NATION, HELP THE WORLD!

This coming June 2009, the Gigaquit Civic Club wish to send at least 1 poor but deserving Gigaquitnon high school graduate to college. We believe that this is one way of helping him, helping his family and so on. . . We just don't know the full extent and impact of this project will be in the future, but surely if pursued continuously, will result to a more progressive Gigaquit.

As has been said in management, the most important asset of all is human resource. Our colleagues in GCC are fine examples of good Gigaquitnon material. Possessing good qualities that can effect positive changes to the world. Now, we have kababayans who are untapped material. If given the right break they will rise, overcome obstacles and will do us all proud. All they need is somebody to lend a hand . . .

. . . and why not make that lending hand be yours? This is an opportunity not only for them but also for you to make your mark. That student whom you will send to school will be like your own child. His success will be yours as well.

Take this challenge ... take this chance.

For details how you can help, please contact the Gigaquit Civic Club at contact-us@gigaquitonline.com or call us at (632) 8346306.
